From 20.4-26.4 the 13th ALFILM – Arab Film Festival Berlin will present over 45 feature films and documentaries as well as shorts and animated films in the sections ALFILM SELECTION, ALFILM SPOTLIGHT and ALFILM ATELIER. ALFILM will open on April 20th at Kino Arsenal with the Egyptian FEATHERS directed by Omar El Zohairy which won the Grand Prix at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes and the Fipresci Prize. ALFILM SELECTION paints a diverse picture of the cultural diversity in the Arab world, from Somalia to Morocco, Yemen to Palestine with contemporary films from the past two years. Many films have a critical, often disturbing gaze on the current political and social themes and deal with identity, migration, social plights and personal crises. The ALFILM SPOTLIGHT section is under the patronage of Volker Schlöndorff. It‘s titled “From Civil War to Chaos: A Tribute to Filmic Resistance“ and presents films about the social situation in Lebanon. Invited filmmakers that live in exile in Berlin and Germany will discuss topics such as identity, belonging, film language, equal opportunity, production possibilities and film funding.
